Fort Smith, Arkansas, in 1910 was a river town on the western edge of the state, where the Poteau River joins the Arkansas. Its years as a frontier garrison and the seat of Judge Isaac Parker's federal court, whose jurisdiction once reached deep into Indian Territory, still shaped local pride even as those days receded. Oklahoma had become a state in 1907 just across the river, and merchants and wholesalers looked to that new neighbor for trade. The St. Louis–San Francisco Railway, known as the Frisco, made the town a freight point for cotton, lumber, and goods moving across the region. Residents would have known Fort Smith as a gateway to the new state, a place where the old frontier had given way to commerce.
