Little Rock in 1910 was the largest city in Arkansas, with a population of roughly 45,000, and it was growing as the state's government, banks and wholesale houses expanded. Construction of a new state capitol on Capitol Hill was underway, a project meant to replace the cramped older building downtown and to give the state a more modern seat of government. Electric streetcars carried workers and shoppers along the main thoroughfares, and the Arkansas Gazette was the newspaper most families read over breakfast. Residents knew their city as a regional center of commerce and politics, where the pace of change was visible in new brick blocks and paved streets.
