Hot Springs, Arkansas, in 1910 was a town squeezed into a narrow valley of the Ouachita Mountains, with its hotels, bathhouses, and shops stacked along the hillsides above the thermal water. The federal Hot Springs Reservation, administered from Washington, still governed the springs and the bathhouse frontage, so the town's growth was shaped by rules set well outside Arkansas. Rail connections carried visitors and freight in and out of the valley, and the seasonal arrival of guests kept hotel kitchens, laundries, and livery stables busy. Local residents of the period would have recognized the scene as the working heart of a health resort, where the next season's business was always on everyone's mind.
