Eureka Springs, Arkansas, in 1916 was a Carroll County resort town on the edge of a national shift in how Americans spent their leisure time. Arkansas's statewide prohibition law took effect at the start of that year, which pressed on the saloons and bars that had served summer visitors and local men alike. Merchants and hotel keepers had to find other ways to fill rooms and keep the cash moving through the season. Within a year the United States would enter the First World War, and many young men from the Ozark hill towns would soon leave for training camps and the front.
