The Country home of John W. Springer, photographed in Colorado in 1910, belongs to a state that was still defining itself a century after statehood in 1876. In 1910 Colorado had roughly 800,000 residents, and its economy rested on cattle and sheep ranching, coal and metal mining, and irrigated farming along the Front Range. Denver, the state capital, was the largest city in the Mountain West and the hub for railroads that carried ore, livestock, and produce east. Sugar beet factories were also reshaping farm life on the plains, bringing seasonal labor and new towns. Wealthy families who had made money in business or land often built rural estates like this one, which signaled both prosperity and a link to the open country that made Colorado's fortunes.
