Ouray, Colorado, in 1910 was a small mining town tucked into a narrow canyon of the San Juan Mountains, its economy built on silver, gold, lead, and zinc taken from nearby mines. The Uncompahgre River ran through the town, and its streets climbed steeply up the canyon walls, which had been cut and shaped by the early settlers who arrived after the silver strikes of the 1870s. Hot springs drew visitors who came to bathe and rest, giving the town a reputation as a spa as well as a mining camp. Ouray was the seat of Ouray County, and its residents knew it as the "Switzerland of America," a nickname that reflected its dramatic setting and its mix of mining work and mountain tourism.
