Leadville in 1912 was still a mining town at more than 10,000 feet, though the silver that had made it famous had given way to lead, zinc, and lower-grade ores that smelters could still treat at a profit. The Colorado Midland Railway, which reached the town in 1887, carried ore out and supplies in, while the Denver and Rio Grande line also served the district. Residents of Lake County knew the place as a hard-working mining seat whose fortunes rose and fell with metal prices set far away. Shift whistles on the hills and smoke from the smelters marked a community that still lived by the day's ore returns.
