Trinidad, in Las Animas County in southern Colorado, sat at the foot of Raton Pass, where the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe main line crossed toward New Mexico. In 1913 its economy depended largely on coal from the hills around town. Mines drew miners from Mexico, southern and eastern Europe, and the older Hispanic communities of the region, and local stores and boarding houses lived on their wages. That autumn the southern Colorado coalfield erupted into a strike against the mine operators, a dispute that would end in the Ludlow Massacre in April 1914, north of town. Kit Carson Park, named for the frontiersman who had ranged through this country, gave residents a green public space tied to the Santa Fe Trail past the town still claimed.
