Manitou Springs, Colorado, sat at the foot of Pikes Peak in 1913, a resort town built around its mineral springs and the cog railway that carried visitors up the mountain. Health seekers and tourists came for the carbonated waters, which were bottled and sold widely, and the town's hotels, bathhouses, and boarding houses depended on their seasonal trade. The Manitou and Pike's Peak Railway, opened in 1891, remained one of the town's main attractions, drawing sightseers from Colorado Springs and beyond. Manitou was a small community then, closely tied to its larger neighbor down the valley, and its residents knew it chiefly as a place of springs, scenery, and summer crowds.
