Denver in 1907 was a fast-growing city of smelters, rail yards, and wholesale houses, sitting at the edge of the Colorado mining districts that had made it rich. Gold and silver ore from the mountains passed through its smelting works, and the railroads that converged on Union Depot carried both raw ore and finished goods out to eastern markets. The city's large Scottish community kept Robert Burns's memory alive through Burns clubs and public gatherings, and a monument to the Ayrshire poet gave them a place to mark the anniversary of his birth each January. Residents in 1907 knew Denver as the "Queen City of the Plains" and as a mountain-edged capital where mining money, cattle trade, and a growing civic life met. The monument and the photograph of it record a city confident in its prosperity, still a few years from the economic swings that would follow.
