Isabelle Glacier sits high in the Indian Peaks country of the Front Range west of Boulder, Colorado, in 1920. The surrounding hills had drawn prospectors and miners since the 1870s and 1890s, and mining camps such as nearby Ward had grown up around gold and silver claims. By 1920 those booms had faded, and the mountain districts were turning toward summer visitors who arrived by automobile and on foot. Coloradans who knew the high country would have recognized the glacier as one of the few permanent ice fields in the state, a landmark for hikers and climbers as much as a feature of the mining landscape. The year also brought national Prohibition and postwar uncertainty to Colorado towns that had long depended on mining wages.
