Arapahoe Peaks and the small glacier on their northern face sit in the Front Range west of Boulder, a landscape that by 1921 drew Denver and Boulder residents on weekend trips up the canyons. Colorado's economy still leaned on mining, agriculture, and the railroads that linked Denver to the mountain towns, though the silver boom of the 1880s and 1890s had faded and many camps had shrunk. Automobiles were beginning to make the mountains easier to reach, and the state's recreation and tourism interest was growing alongside older work in timber, cattle, and mineral extraction. Ice on high peaks like these was a familiar sight to local hikers and climbers, who understood it as a remnant of colder times rather than a permanent feature. Ed Tangen's panorama records a scene that many Coloradans in the Front Range corridor would have recognized as a backdrop to their daily lives.
