Sun Palace, a large ceremonial structure on the mesa top in southwestern Colorado, was photographed in 1918, twelve years after Congress set Mesa Verde aside as a national park in 1906. Cowboys and settlers had known the cliff ruins since the late 1880s, when Richard Wetherill and his partners found them and removed artifacts for private collectors. Federal protection had ended that kind of looting in principle, but the park remained remote and hard to reach by rough roads. In 1918 the United States was in the last months of the First World War, and visitors were few. Those who came were drawn by a growing sense that the ruins were the homes of an ancient people worth studying and preserving.
