Cliff Palace, in Mesa Verde National Park in southwestern Colorado, was a mostly undeveloped place in 1918. The park had been set aside in 1906 to protect the cliff dwellings and mesa-top sites left by the Ancestral Puebloan people, who had abandoned the area roughly seven centuries earlier. Visitors reached the mesa over rough roads and trails from the nearby towns of Mancos and Durango, and the surrounding region depended on ranching, farming, and mining. The United States was in the final months of the First World War that year, and the park's small staff worked with limited funds to protect the ruins from looting and weathering. Local residents knew the site as a remarkable piece of the American Southwest, though few had seen the dwellings up close.
