Piers and wharves crowd the riverfront in this view of Jacksonville, Florida, one of three glass negatives that once formed a four-part panorama. The St. Johns River was the city's commercial lifeline in these years, carrying freight and passengers between the port and the Atlantic, so the waterfront was a busy working edge of town. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the picture sometime between 1900 and 1915, sold views like this to travelers and businesses across the country. The panorama's right center section is missing from the collection, and the right negative is cracked and taped, so the scene survives only in part.
