A fountain rising from a pond in a Jacksonville city park is the focus of this view, one of many scenes of Florida's public grounds that photographers working for the Detroit Publishing Company recorded. Jacksonville, on the St. Johns River, drew wealthy winter visitors in the late 1800s, and the company's views were meant to show travelers and the businesses that served them what the South had to offer. The picture survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, dated between 1895 and 1910, and its notes record that it was given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949. The fine detail on the glass rewards close looking at the water, the plantings, and the fountain's form.
