Hemming Park, a downtown green in Jacksonville, Florida, is the setting here, and its Confederate monument anchors the view. Monuments like this one rose across the South in the decades after the Civil War, many in the early 1900s, when towns placed them in squares and parks to honor the Confederate dead. The photograph dates from roughly the 1910s and was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for travel views of American cities and landmarks sold as postcards and prints. Its large 8 by 10 inch glass negative would have recorded fine detail in the stonework and the surrounding trees.
