The Hotel Duval takes its name from Duval County, which honors William Pope Duval, a territorial governor of Florida. Its photograph dates from roughly 1900 to 1905, when Jacksonville, on the St. Johns River, was a growing winter destination for northern visitors arriving by rail. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made large-format views of American towns and resorts for tourism and promotion, produced this image as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative. Such hotels were central to Jacksonville's tourist trade, and the view offers a record of how the city presented itself to travelers at the turn of the century.
