Few details survive about the St. James Hotel itself, but the picture belongs to a period when Jacksonville was a major winter destination for northern travelers, and hotels like this one drew visitors arriving by rail. The image is an 8 x 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold large numbers of views of American towns, hotels and resorts to tourists around the turn of the 20th century. The "WHJ" inscription on the negative likely refers to William Henry Jackson, the photographer whose work the company distributed. Large-format negatives like this one were the source for the prints the firm sold.
