A glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, catalogued as number 32480, records a view of the armory in Jacksonville, Florida, made sometime between 1895 and 1910. Armories of that era served as drill halls and gathering places for local militia units, so their size and architecture often signaled a city's civic standing. The Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers across the country to document towns and landmarks for sale as views and postcards, which makes this plate a useful record of how Jacksonville presented itself at the turn of the century. The penciled marking "WHJ 149" on the negative is a working reference from the company's own filing.
