Tied up at a Jacksonville wharf, the freighter Huron belonged to the Clyde Line, a steamship company that carried passengers and freight between Northern ports and Florida along the Atlantic coast. Jacksonville's riverfront was a busy shipping point in the early 1900s, and the subject tags for this view, which include lumber and piers, suggest that the region's pine was moving north by sea. The glass negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American towns, waterways and industry around the turn of the century, often for travel and commercial promotion.
