This view shows the steamship Arapahoe tied up at the piers in Jacksonville, Florida, part of the Clyde Line's coastal service. In the early 1900s, Jacksonville was a busy Atlantic port on the St. Johns River, where passenger and freight steamers linked the city with northern ports such as New York. The picture was made on a glass plate negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American towns, waterfronts and transportation for commercial sale. Its dock scene offers a useful record of how steam travel and cargo handling worked at the time.
