Workers taking their midday meal on the levee at Jacksonville, Florida, are the subject of this glass negative, which shows longshoremen pausing from loading and unloading cargo along the St. Johns River waterfront. The Detroit Publishing Company made the picture sometime between 1900 and 1915, and its catalog of American towns and landscapes often included working people alongside scenery. Jacksonville was a busy shipping port then, handling lumber, phosphate, and citrus, so the scene offers a glimpse of the daily routine of the riverfront labor that kept those goods moving.
