Longshoremen taking their midday break on a Jacksonville levee are the focus of this view, shown eating and drinking at the working edge of the waterfront. In the early 1900s, the St. Johns River was an active shipping route, and levees like this one were where cargo was loaded and unloaded largely by hand. The glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American towns, landscapes and working life in the years before 1915, so the picture preserves a glimpse of everyday dock labor.
