The Seminole Club was a clubhouse in Jacksonville, Florida, a city that drew winter visitors and new residents in the 1910s and was a busy port on the St. Johns River. Clubhouses like this one hosted dances, dinners and meetings for social and civic groups, which were central to community life in that era. The view was made as an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative, the large-format medium the Detroit Publishing Company used for its commercial photographs of American cities, scenery and architecture. Many of those negatives were later reproduced as postcards and travel views.
