This color halftone shows the Post Office and Federal Building in Jacksonville, Florida, a civic landmark in a city that had to rebuild much of its downtown after the Great Fire of 1901. Federal buildings of this era were often the most imposing structures in growing American cities, housing mail operations along with courts and other federal offices. The image is a photomechanical reproduction, a process that brought tinted views like this one to postcards, booklets and advertising in the early twentieth century. The record dates it only broadly, to between about 1900 and 1945, so its exact origin remains uncertain.
