The fiery collapse of the German airship Hindenburg at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey, in May 1937 is one of the most recognized disasters of the early aviation era. The giant zeppelin, filled with hydrogen, had completed a transatlantic passenger crossing and was mooring when it burst into flames and fell to the field in under a minute. More than 30 people died, and the disaster ended the public's confidence in passenger travel by rigid airships. Notice how the stern is already engulfed while the nose still hangs above the mooring mast, a moment that captured the speed of the catastrophe.
