This view shows an airship recorded as Zeppelin No. 3, photographed resting on the ground, where its great length is easy to judge. The title comes from Bain News Service caption data that the record marks as unverified, and "blimp" deserves a second look, since Zeppelin craft were rigid airships with metal frameworks rather than the non-rigid blimps the term usually describes. Germany's Zeppelin airships drew wide press attention in the early twentieth century as the most advanced lighter-than-air craft of their day. Bain's news photographs were made for newspaper use, so pictures like this one recorded aviation stories for a general audience.
