Muybridge's trotting horse is the one in this series that shows the animal's legs in the air at once, a detail that made it stand out to contemporary viewers. The plate comes from his 1878 and 1879 sequences at Palo Alto, California, made with Leland Stanford's support to settle a question that had divided horsemen for years: whether a trotting horse ever lifts all four hooves off the ground together. Printed as an albumen photograph and issued in 1881 as no. 25 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, it helped establish the image sequence as a tool for studying movement and laid groundwork for the development of motion pictures.
