Muybridge's trotting horse is the one plate here that shows a working gait in motion rather than a standing or walking animal. The sequence was made at Leland Stanford's Palo Alto property in 1878 and 1879, when Muybridge set a row of cameras along a track and tripped their shutters with threads as the horse passed. This print is no. 28 from *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, published in 1881, where it appears among the consecutive frames that helped settle a long-running argument about whether all four hooves leave the ground at once during a trot. The series is a landmark in the history of motion study and an early step toward motion pictures.
