Plate 26 in Eadweard Muybridge's 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* shows a trotting horse drawing a light carriage, one of the sequences made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. Muybridge arranged a row of cameras along a track and triggered them as the animal passed, breaking a single movement into a series of separate exposures. The project was backed by Leland Stanford, a former governor of California with a stake in harness racing, who wanted to settle whether all four hooves leave the ground at once during a trot. Viewed in sequence, these frames became some of the earliest scientific studies of motion recorded photographically.
