This albumen print shows a trotting horse drawing a carriage, one of the motion studies Eadweard Muybridge made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. It appeared as plate 29 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, published in 1881, where it was one of a series of consecutive positions meant to be read in order. The series was made for Leland Stanford, who wanted to settle whether a trotting horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge's rows of cameras, triggered by threads stretched across the track, helped turn that dispute into evidence and gave early motion studies a method that later fed into the development of motion pictures.
