Eadweard Muybridge made this albumen print around 1881 as one frame from his sequence studies of horses in motion, taken at Leland Stanford's horse-breeding property in Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. The "Trotting" sequence shows a horse at speed, pulling a carriage, and it was published as plate 32 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*. Muybridge's use of rapid successive exposures helped answer a long-running question about whether a trotting horse ever had all four hooves off the ground at once. The series is widely cited as an early step toward motion pictures, which is why this print is often shown alongside the history of film.
