Plate 33 in Muybridge's *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* shows a trotting horse drawing a carriage, a pairing the subject headings note and that sets it apart from the saddle and free-running studies in the series. Muybridge made the photographs at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, working for Leland Stanford, a former governor and racehorse breeder who wanted to learn whether all four hooves left the ground at once in a trot. Muybridge answered that question with a row of cameras triggered by tripwires as the animal passed. Sequences like this one, published in 1881, became an early step toward motion pictures, which is why the image appears in film history collections.
