This print shows a horse at the trot, with a carriage in the subject headings, and it is plate 31 in Eadweard Muybridge's 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*. The photographs were made at Palo Alto in 1878 and 1879, largely on Leland Stanford's stock farm, where Stanford wanted to settle whether a horse's hooves ever all left the ground at once. Muybridge used a row of cameras triggered by the passing animal to break motion into a sequence of frames, something painters had only approximated. Viewers can still compare the position of each leg from one moment to the next.
