Plate 27 in Eadweard Muybridge's *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* shows a horse caught mid-trot, one step in a sequence of consecutive positions. Muybridge made the series at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, on the farm of Leland Stanford, a former governor and horse breeder who had commissioned the work to settle a long-running debate over whether a trotting horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge used a row of cameras with shutters fired by tripwires to freeze motion that the eye could not follow, and this albumen print preserves that record. Its images later helped pave the way for motion pictures.
