Among the plates Muybridge made at Palo Alto, this one shows a horse at the trot, a gait that the eye could not reliably read at speed. The sequences were photographed on Leland Stanford's horse-breeding property in 1878 and 1879, with a row of cameras fired in quick succession as the animal passed. Published in 1881 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, the series was meant to settle questions about how hooves actually strike and leave the ground, and it became an early step toward motion pictures.
