Plate 23 in Eadweard Muybridge's *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* shows a trotting horse hitched to a carriage, one of the sequences he made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. Those experiments were funded by Leland Stanford, who wanted to learn whether a horse's hooves all leave the ground at once during a gallop. Muybridge set up a row of cameras along the track, each triggered by a tripwire as the horse passed, which broke the animal's motion into separate frames. This albumen print, copyrighted in 1881, helped establish sequence photography, a method that later fed into motion pictures.
