Naples in 1909 was the largest city in southern Italy, a crowded port of several hundred thousand people whose waterfront handled passenger steamers, freight, and a steady flow of emigrants bound for the Americas. The city had been reshaped since the cholera epidemic of 1884, when slum clearance and new building began to open up its old quarters. Tourists arriving by steamer also came for the view of the bay, with Vesuvius rising behind the city and the islands of Capri and Ischia lying offshore. The volcano was a constant presence, and residents living in its shadow had seen the 1906 eruption damage towns on its slopes. Panoramic views like this one made the bay look like a showpiece of Italy's south.
