Rome in 1909 was the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, a state only about four decades old, after the city became the seat of government in 1871 when the papal states were absorbed. Its population had nearly doubled since the early 1870s, and new residential districts were spreading beyond the old walls. The monuments shown here, the Arch of Titus, the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine, sat at the center of ongoing excavation in the Roman Forum, which drew scholars and tourists from across Europe and America. Residents and visitors alike knew these ruins as the core of a city trying to reconcile its papal past with its new role as a modern national capital.
