In 1909 the Roman Forum was an open excavation rather than the tidy ruin visitors see today. Rome had been the capital of the Kingdom of Italy since 1871, and the city was expanding quickly, with new government ministries, housing, and rail connections reshaping its edges. Archaeologists led by Giacomo Boni had been clearing the Forum since the late 1890s, and the Via Sacra and the old temple bases were still being revealed, so the ground in the photograph would have looked raw and unfinished to residents. Beyond the Forum stood the Colosseum, which Romans of the period knew as both a famous monument and a tourist draw for travelers arriving by train from across Europe.
