Rome in 1909 was the capital of a kingdom that had been united only a few decades earlier, and the city was expanding as new government offices, apartment blocks, and wide avenues rose beyond the old center. The Roman Forum, shown here with the Capitoline Hill beyond it, was the focus of a major archaeological effort, as Giacomo Boni had been directing excavations since the late 1890s, clearing medieval buildings and soil to reach ancient pavements. Visitors and scholars walked among the Arch of Septimius Severus and the surviving columns of the Temple of Saturn, while the great white monument to Victor Emmanuel II was still under construction on the slopes of the Capitol. Many Romans and Italians saw the Forum as a symbol of national pride, a link between the new Italian state and the ancient city.
