Rome in 1909 was about four decades into its role as capital of a unified Italy, a status it gained in 1870 when national troops entered the city and ended papal temporal rule. Its population had more than doubled since then as civil servants, builders and migrants from the countryside arrived, and new ministries and wide avenues were cutting through older neighborhoods. At the foot of the Capitoline Hill, the Roman Forum was being excavated under archaeologist Giacomo Boni, whose digs since 1898 drew scholars and sightseers alike. Nearby, the white monument to Victor Emmanuel II was still under construction, an emblem of national unity that was taking shape above the ancient ruins.
