Rome in 1909 was the capital of a kingdom only about four decades old, unified in 1871, and its government was busy reshaping the old city to suit a modern state. The Roman Forum, where the republic and later the emperors had conducted public business, was still being dug out of centuries of soil and rubble, with archaeologists such as Giacomo Boni uncovering temples and the ancient black stone known as the Lapis Niger. Visitors arrived by train and hotel carriage, and the city's economy leaned on government offices, construction and the tourist trade more than on factories. Nearby, the great white Vittoriano monument to Victor Emmanuel II was rising toward completion, a symbol of the new Italy set beside the ancient ruins it overshadowed.
