In 1909, Piazza San Marco sat at the center of a Venice that had lived off its past for decades. The city had been part of the Kingdom of Italy since 1866, and its old maritime trade had shrunk, so tourism, the glassworks of nearby Murano, and steamers on the Grand Canal were becoming more important to its economy. The square served as the city's civic and religious heart, ringed by the Basilica, the Doge's Palace, and the cafés where visitors gathered in the evenings. Residents would also have noticed the empty space where the bell tower once stood, since the campanile had collapsed in 1902 and was still being rebuilt, a project not finished until 1912.
