Venice in 1909 was a city whose fortunes had shifted sharply over the previous half century. After Austria ceded the Veneto to the newly unified Kingdom of Italy in 1866, the lagoon city lost its old role as a Mediterranean trading power, and its population had been slowly declining from its mid-nineteenth-century peak. Tourism had grown steadily since the railway bridge across the lagoon opened in 1846, bringing steamers and gondoliers into daily contact with visitors arriving from the mainland. The Grand Canal, which runs in a broad S-curve through the heart of the old city, was the principal thoroughfare for water taxis, cargo barges, and the public vaporetto service that had begun operating only a few years earlier. Residents knew the canal as the city's working street, lined with palaces that had grown shabby while still serving as homes, offices, and warehouses.
