In 1909 Venice held a population of roughly 150,000, and its visitors increasingly came for the art rather than the commerce. The city had hosted the International Art Exhibition, the Biennale, since 1895, with national pavilions in the Giardini gardens drawing crowds each summer. Across the water, the Lido had become a fashionable seaside resort, and the Grand Hotel des Bains, opened there in 1900, catered to wealthy guests who crossed the lagoon by steamboat. From the open lagoon, the skyline of domes and bell towers would have been the first thing a traveler saw, and many Venetians of the day would have known the view as the way they came home.
