Rome, 1909: the view of St. Peter's Basilica and its great colonnade shows a city that had been Italy's capital since 1871, when the Kingdom of Italy took the papal city from the pope's temporal rule. The Vatican and the Italian government were still at odds over that loss, and Pope Pius X, who held the papacy from 1903 to 1914, governed the church from within the Vatican walls rather than recognizing the new state. Bernini's oval piazza, completed in the 1600s, was a place where pilgrims and visitors gathered, and rail links had made Rome easier to reach from northern Europe than it had been in earlier generations. Residents of the period would have known the square first as the heart of Catholic Rome, even as the city's modern government and new public buildings reshaped its streets around it.
