Venice in 1909 was a city whose fortunes rested on a shrinking base of trade and a growing dependence on tourism. The old maritime republic had lost its empire centuries earlier, and by the early twentieth century its economy leaned on glassmaking on Murano, lace and textile work, and the arsenal's remaining shipbuilding. The Venice Santa Lucia railway station, opened in 1860 and linked to the mainland rail line across the lagoon causeway, had made the city reachable by train, and steamers carried travelers from the lagoon's edge to the Piazza San Marco. Italy had been unified for about fifty years, and Venetians were still adjusting to life as a provincial city within a young kingdom. This view across open water shows the city as visitors of the period would have approached it, by boat, with its domes and campanili rising from the lagoon.
