Venice in 1909 was a city of the newly unified Kingdom of Italy, still living off a past as a great maritime power while its economy shifted toward glassmaking on Murano, lace and textiles, and a growing trade in visitors. The railway causeway, completed in 1846, had linked the lagoon city to the mainland, and travelers arriving at the Santa Lucia station reached the Grand Canal by steamer or gondola. The Rialto Bridge, a stone span finished in 1591, had long been the main crossing point on the canal and stood beside the produce and fish markets that supplied the city's households. Its ferries, barges, and gondolas moved goods and people past the bridge every day, and the view of that busy waterway was already a familiar image for the tourists who came to see it.
